From Science to Celebrations: Cecilia Claudio’s Elegant Evolution

What do environmental biology and elegant weddings have in common? According to Cecilia Claudio, more than you’d think.

In a recent conversation hosted by the Tampa Bay Latin Chamber, Cecilia shared her inspiring journey from scientist to event visionary. Today, she’s the co-founder of Elegant Evening Events, a thriving planning company she launched 12 years ago with her business partner, Maria Parrilla. Together, they’ve built a business that offers everything from full-service wedding planning to customized corporate and nonprofit events across Tampa Bay and beyond.

It all began with an unexpected moment of grace—helping a bride bustle her dress. That small favor led to Cecilia’s first paid “fluff service,” and soon, more brides came calling. One day, when a wedding coordinator failed to show, Cecilia stepped in and managed the entire event. The experience sparked a passion that turned into a full-fledged business.

“We didn’t have business backgrounds,” Cecilia admitted with a smile. “We read books, went to workshops, and just learned as we went.”

From officiant services and Mimosa bars to elegant design concepts, Elegant Evening Events is known for going above and beyond. Cecilia and Maria pride themselves on working with a wide range of clients, from couples to corporations, always tailoring their services to the needs—and budgets—of each event.

Of course, building a respected planning firm wasn’t without challenges. Cecilia recalled how early on, many dismissed their work as “just a hobby.” But she pushed forward, emphasizing education, certifications, and professionalism. Their status as a women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned business has opened doors—and helped them uplift other local entrepreneurs along the way.

Cecilia’s impact doesn’t end with weddings and galas. As Rental Coordinator at Stage Works Theater, she helps lead Hispanic initiatives and is currently planning a cultural festival to highlight Latinos voices and performances.

Being part of the Tampa Bay Latin Chamber, she says, has been a game changer. “The Chamber connects us to other organizations, resources, and—most importantly—our community.”

Her advice to Hispanic entrepreneurs? “Don’t give up. Seek out resources, be willing to pivot, and stay resilient. Your success is possible.”
