Melvin A. Azofeifa’s journey is one of resilience, transformation, and service. A Costa Rican-born Florida native, Azofeifa has navigated multiple industries, served his country, and is now giving back in a meaningful way. As the Founder and Executive Director of Stairway for Heroes, he is dedicated to helping veterans transition into civilian life through the sport of golf.

His path to this mission was anything but conventional. Before joining the U.S. Navy in 2008 at the age of 30, Azofeifa worked in the RV and mortgage industries. The economic downturn of 2008 forced him to reassess his career, leading him to serve his country during a time of great uncertainty. His military career came with its own challenges, from navigating family issues to facing the bureaucratic hurdles of transitioning out of service. Like many veterans, he found the adjustment to civilian life daunting, particularly in securing employment and accessing medical benefits.
It was during this transition that Azofeifa rediscovered his passion for golf. More than just a game, golf became a source of solace, discipline, and camaraderie. Recognizing its potential to help other veterans, he founded Stairway for Heroes, a nonprofit dedicated to providing veterans with golf clubs, lessons, and networking opportunities. The organization not only introduces veterans to the sport but also fosters personal and professional growth through events and community engagement.
Stairway for Heroes has gained significant momentum, with upcoming events that promise to expand its reach. On April 10, the organization will host a Happy Hour at the Centre Club, offering supporters a chance to connect and learn more about its mission. The highlight of the year, however, will be the Golf Tournament on May 16 at Plantation Palms Golf Club, which serves as the organization’s largest fundraiser. Azofeifa has ambitious goals, aiming to have 3 veterans being added quarterly to his golf program and doubling that amount every year.
Despite the challenges of securing financial support and increasing awareness, Azofeifa remains committed to expanding Stairway for Heroes. He envisions hosting tournaments at prestigious courses such as Valspar or Innisbrook, further elevating the organization’s impact. As a member of the Tampa Bay Latin Chamber, he values the power of networking and community in advancing his mission.
For Hispanic entrepreneurs looking to build successful ventures, Azofeifa emphasizes the importance of market research, mentorship, and perseverance. His journey exemplifies how resilience and community support can transform challenges into opportunities.
