Discipline, Dreams, and Dominican Pride: The Story of Tavarez Martial Arts

When you step into Tavarez Martial Arts Academy, you can feel it — that mix of discipline, family, and community that turns a simple dojo into something far greater. Founded by Juan Tavarez and Rita Cruz, this Tampa-based academy has become a hub where strength meets culture, and martial arts becomes a bridge between passion and purpose.

Rita, originally from the Dominican Republic, brings both warmth and vision to the business side of the academy. With a strong sense of community and a knack for building connections, she’s not only the co-owner of the academy in Pasco County, but also an active member of the Tampa Bay Latin Chamber of Commerce (TBLC) — where she continues to expand her network and learn from fellow entrepreneurs.

Her husband, Juan, is the quiet force behind the mats. A black belt in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he has more than 25 years of experience in martial arts. His teaching philosophy blends the best of both worlds — the discipline of Judo and the adaptability of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) — creating well-rounded fighters and confident students of all ages.

Together, Juan and Rita have built more than a gym. They’ve created a community space that welcomes everyone — from kids learning their first takedown to adults rediscovering confidence through self-defense or yoga. The academy’s schedule is diverse: Judo, BJJ, self-defense, private classes, and even yoga on Saturdays at their Odessa location. And now, they’re preparing for a major milestone — the grand opening of their new facility on November 1st.

Their journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Like many small business owners, they’ve faced challenges — from navigating legal compliance to managing growth — but their resilience stands out. “Every challenge taught us something valuable,” Rita shared during their conversation with TBLC’s Paula Sofia Gómez, co-chair of the Chamber’s Innovation and Marketing Team. “We learned to stay compliant, set up the right systems, and keep moving forward. It’s something we’re proud of.”

Their connection to the TBLC has been a key part of that growth. Through networking events, luncheons, and learning opportunities, Rita and Juan have found a space to exchange ideas, get inspired, and open doors to new business ventures — including plans to pitch their services to local government programs in the near future.

And perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of their story is deeply personal. “The other thing we always make sure people know,” Rita explained, “is that we are autism friendly — because of our son.” The academy went through the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) at USF, where representatives personally observed their classes. As a result, Tavarez Martial Arts was officially certified as an Autism-Friendly Business — a recognition that reflects their heart for inclusion and accessibility.

What sets them apart isn’t just their skill on the mats; it’s their heart for people. Juan beams with pride when he talks about his students — especially the high school wrestler who trained at the academy and is now excelling in school competitions. “That’s what it’s all about,” he says. “Seeing them grow, not just as athletes, but as individuals.”

As they look toward expansion and community partnerships, one thing is clear: Tavarez Martial Arts is more than a family business — it’s a symbol of cultural pride, perseverance, and empowerment within Tampa Bay’s Latin community.

For anyone looking to get involved, Rita and Juan’s advice is simple but powerful: “Get out there. Network. Connect with the community. The opportunities are there — you just have to show up.”

So mark your calendars, show up, and experience it yourself at their grand opening on November 1st — where martial arts meets familia, and every punch, pose, and practice tells a story of passion and purpose.
