Melissa Ramos: Leading with Heart, Building Comunidad

Melissa Ramos, President of HPWA, inspires with resilience and purpose. From an Army brat to a Latina leader, she champions mentorship, community, and empowerment—opening doors for women and building strong partnerships to uplift the next generation.

When Melissa Ramos walks into a room, you instantly feel it—confidence, purpose, and a spark that says: “Wepaaaa. Let’s make something happen.” From her early years growing up as an Army brat in Puerto Rico to becoming the President of the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association (HPWA), Melissa’s journey is one of resilience, reinvention, and representation.

“Yo siempre supe que quería hacer algo grande,” she says. And she has—on her own terms.

Melissa’s original dream? International law. But life had other plans. She followed her husband into military life, moved frequently, and ultimately landed in Tampa, a city she now proudly calls home. “Cada paso me preparó para lo que estoy haciendo hoy. I didn’t take a straight path, but I found my purpose along the way.”

That purpose is rooted in serving others and elevating women—especially Latinas navigating professional spaces where they’re often the “only one in the room.” With a master’s degree in Organizational Management and Business Administration, Melissa has spent her career opening doors for others—and making sure they stay open.

As President of HPWA, Melissa is on a mission: to give women real value—not just a title or a seat at the table, but tools, guidance, and meaningful mentorship.

“You have to earn the right to be mentored. And we, as leaders, have to earn their trust too,” she says.

Her vision includes revamping HPWA’s mentorship program and creating a strong, actionable curriculum that speaks directly to the needs of women in today’s workforce.

And she’s not doing it alone. Melissa believes deeply in strategic partnerships. She’s collaborating with organizations like Embark Collective and the Women’s Conference of Florida, and she’s passionate about involving institutions like St. Petersburg College.

“There’s so much talent right here en nuestra comunidad. We don’t need to look far—we need to look deeper.”

Beyond HPWA, Melissa serves as a board member of the Tampa Bay Latin Chamber, advocating for economic opportunity, leadership pipelines, and representation across industries.

“We are growing as a comunidad. We need to be at the table—not just for ourselves, but for the next generation.”

Her story is also one of grit. She’s faced challenges as a Hispanic woman in finance, but used them as fuel.

“Credibility matters. But so does confianza—confidence. Don’t shrink yourself. Don’t wait for permission.”

She encourages aspiring leaders to align with organizations that reflect their values.

“If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Encuentra tu equipo. Your people. And don’t be afraid to show up as you are.”

Now, with plans to expand HPWA’s media presence and storytelling, Melissa is setting the tone for what’s next. Her leadership is bold, empathetic, and grounded in comunidad.

Because for Melissa Ramos, empowering others isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

En la unión está la fuerza!
